Mercedes 2.0

I dreamt that you swallowed me whole,
when a thousand miles you were falling apart
flake by flake.

Let your pieces look upon
the next version of you
from the pipes now underneath me.

  1. to polo,
my beta who died when I was traveling:

Blue and red swirls in a still grassy block
You were the one who needed me
    and never said it
    or even knew it
but you needed me the most.
    I found you,
    could have been anybody,
    I left you too.
    I'm sorry.

You dreamt of leaping out of your pond
    and into a wall,
    out the window
    into the river
where you would have taken all comers
    and won.
But no one knows a ninja is a ninja
and you retreated into a grassy corner
    to vibrate in time
to hum with the deep knowledge of this mystery.

You were curled up upside down,
though underwater there is no right side up
you were a spiral in the iron red leaves
and your eyes moved in your head
and when you got scared you made bubble nests.

You were my friend and where are you now?
It's only an illusion of time
    that says then you were
    and now you are not.
You are blue and red swirls,
    triumphantly tattered fins,
a few pale scales on your face
from the time when things got to you

and I couldn't sleep when your water was bad,
and my dreams were full of overcrowded fish tanks
and fish flopping on the floor,
fish turning to birds and flying away.
